JON CROSS,
State Representative
House District 83
What is your experience with nonprofit organizations? I previously served as CEO and Director of Economic Development for the Hardin County Chamber and Business Alliance. My time at the chamber was very rewarding as I was able to help the community that raised me to grow and prosper. Working at the chamber also helped me understand what challenges and opportunities nonprofit organizations face in their operation.
As you know, the nonprofit sector is under a significant amount of stress providing important community services during the pandemic. What is your advice to nonprofits that are struggling during this time? My advice would be to stay alert for opportunities and programs that are provided through the state and federal government. Many grants and low-interest loan programs have been created in the last year to support nonprofits and the important work they do.. In addition, your elected officials are there to help so I would encourage advocacy efforts by reaching out to local representatives and make them aware of current challenges. Together, solutions can be found to improve current law and remove unnecessary mandates.
Why do you think it’s important for nonprofit organizations to be engaged in advocacy work? Advocacy is important to voice your concerns and needs to your elected officials. Legislators are hearing from many different organizations, whether it is nonprofits or for-profits, and the more information we obtain the better we can help you. We also may not be aware of specific issues facing your organization so advocating for your budget and/or policy needs is essential for us to help.
How can the nonprofit sector engage with you and support you in your work in the Ohio House of Representatives? As we start transitioning back to in-person meetings, I truly enjoy meeting with nonprofit organizations and seeing firsthand the positive impact that they are having on the community. This is essential for understanding the needs of my district especially when they are concerning budget issues. The Capital Budget is also a great tool to assist nonprofit organizations in any big developments or projects that need funding assistance from the state government.
What are your priorities for the 134th General Assembly? How will those priorities impact nonprofit organizations and the people they serve? As Chairman of the Finance Subcommittee on Higher Education, many of my priorities include workforce development in the State of Ohio and making sure our students are prepared for highly skilled, in-demand jobs. This will attract competitive companies, which will make Ohio a better place for people to get an education and stay to work. Attracting more businesses and retaining students in our state would assist all types of nonprofits by growing Ohio’s tax base and allowing more funds to support their mission and operations.
